A spring on Nisyros — and a drone

In April 2022, I traveled with a group and my friend Tom Pfeiffer to the volcanic island of Nisyros, Greece, for hiking and exploration. We discovered many new and fascinating places and had plenty of time for photography. While Tom introduced our guests to the island’s remarkable geology, I often took the opportunity to explore the landscape from above and capture striking aerial images.

From the air, geological and even archaeological features become much easier to recognize and understand. For me, a drone is simply a creative tool — much like a regular camera — that turns a photographer’s vision into reality.

Today’s drone technology is highly safe and reliable, so it’s difficult to understand why drones still carry such a negative reputation. No one is secretly being spied on; I typically use a wide-angle lens, which renders people tiny and unrecognizable. Once you see the results, it’s clear that aerial photography can reveal unique perspectives and stunning images that inspire and inform — not just for scientists and experts, but for anyone who loves nature, travel, and discovery.
